COMMUNITY ART AT THE Y

Featured Artist: Various

Purpose

The Y is a community leader improving the quality of life for all. The newly enhanced Y has become the central gathering place for people of all ages. More than 4,500 members and guests are expected to visit the Y each year. Within the newly renovated Y, space has been created within the lounge area and walls surrounding the elevated track to display community art.

Why Art

Maine is noted for its vibrant arts communities and Damariscotta is no exception. Most individuals have an appreciation for art through observation or creation. Art is integral in our culture because it provides us with a deeper understanding of emotions, self-awareness, beauty, education and more.  This allows our community a venue to express itself, as well as showcase the talents of artists and children in our area.

Description

Artists:

An arts task force has been created to lead the decisions around yearly art selection. The Community Art at the Y Task Force will select art with subject matter that is appropriate for all ages; is non-political; enhances the Y’s vibrancy; and supports the Y’s overall mission of youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. This committee is responsible for communication with the artists and will orchestrate the hanging and taking down of art at the end of the quarter.

Artists from Damariscotta, Newcastle, Bristol, South Bristol, Whitefield, Jefferson, Waldoboro, Nobleboro, Bremen and Friendship are eligible to have their art displayed at the CLC YMCA. Several artists will be selected each year to showcase their art. Click for artist information and submission form. If an artist would like to sell their art, prices can be listed on each piece, however, it will be up to each artist to handle their individual sales. A 30 percent donation to the Y is recommended from any art sold as a result of being displayed at the Y. Artists may download the artist waiver here.

Students:

Each year for a period of one to three months, the Y will showcase student artwork. Schools located in Damariscotta, Newcastle, Bristol, South Bristol, Whitefield, Jefferson, Waldoboro, Nobleboro, Bremen and Friendship are invited to participate.

Access student information here. It is recommended that art teachers meet with Ann Baldwin (a teacher at Bristol Consolidated School and member of the Y Board) to discuss the Y arts project so it can be built into art teacher’s curriculum before the school year begins. To learn more, contact Ann Baldwin at abaldwin@AOS93.org.
