Beginners, known as Second Mates, learn the basics of steering the boat and controlling the sail. They also learn basic knots and rules of seamanship. The average age range for second mates is 7-10 years old, though this is not required.
More advanced students are known as First Mates and are required to have already passed the second mate position. They will learn more complex knots as well as new boat maneuvers, such as landing on the instructor boat and going into safety position among others. This position is usually for students ages 9-12.
The Skipper position is attained by more experienced students who have already demonstrated proficiency in the lower levels. This part of the course looks at racing, as well as sailing backwards and other tricks of the trade. It is recommneded that students be at least 11 years old before they try this level.
When heading to Sailing Camp you will need to bring the following:
1. Comfortable Life Jacket. It should be US Coast Guard approved and easy to move around in. You will be wearing it alot!
2. Bathing Suit & Towel. Every student will have to take a short, basic swimming test on Monday in order to sail. We often smim just for fun on hot days!
3. Lunch, snacks & water bottle be sure you have enough to eat and drink. Be sure to use a cooler as a hot day will spoil your lunch if it is in a paper bag.
4. Sunscreen, Very Important! Rays from the sun and reflections off the water can cause serious burns. Be sure to bring at leat an SPR 15. Apply the sunscreen before you arrive and bring some to re-apply later.
5. Sunglasses and/or Hat with a brim this will help to prefent headaches and eye strain
6. Change of clothes, sweatshirt or jacket & shoes. Dress for the weather, but remember, it is often a bit cooler in Round Pond.
7. Raingear Yes! We do sail in the rain! Best wind you'll ever see. Always be prepared. (We will not sail during thunderstorms, of course).
8. Curiosity, Creativity, a desire to learn and a great attitude!!!!
